Volunteering and Sharing Cultures

In La Lucha de la Tigra, Costa Rica and its neighboring town Florencia; we were blessed to share our lives with others. We got to teach English and a Clean Your Soul class to the adults, English in the local school, and share precious moments with the senior citizens. We gave a few gifts and got so many, many more. This collection of video and pictures reflects a few moments from that magic.

Gabi's Singing Debut in Hebrew

God must love these lovely moments when cultures intertwine so.

In Florencia, Costa Rica, we volutneer with a lovely group of elder people. Javier, the community organizer, explained to our group that we would love to teach them and share with them our culture and what we know, and we'd love equally to learn from them what they can share with us.

After Kendall sang in Spanish and made this young-at-heart crowd cheer and clap and sing; I got up and sang an old, sweet classic Israeli song about loving the bee's honey and its sting. The song says that both are a blessed part of life.

92 Year Old and Dances Like a Tiger

You can see her on the right near the window as Gabi talks to this marvelous group of senior citizens who have kindly adopted our family. Here I explain to them in my broken Spanish how Kobi and I have always been drawn to the Latino culture and see it as an honor to be here with them. I go on to explain that I believe that angels always tell people where to go, who to talk to, what to do and that (this part is cut off) that we feel the angels brought us here and we are so thankful to God for this blessing.

Meet Alfredo

One man, two houses down, his name is Alfredo. His wife left him one day with three young boys. He's a single father doing the best he knows how to raise his boys. He came to ask what time to classes are. He's very shy and quiet.

Later, he comes back to ask what would the price be for him and his three boys. When i told him free, his eyes shone and he laughed, "es gratis? muy bien!" (it's free? great!) Well no, I tell him, each class participant is asked to bring one fruit or vegetable. "es buen idea!" (that's a great idea!).

So, we're excited to see Alfredo today. He's a handyman and says that often gringos (americas) want to hire him for work but because he can't speak any English, he can't understand them and thus loses the work. He hopes to learn a little bit of English that will help him make more money. How wonderful that maybe something really good will come of all this.

At five o'clock, we're teaching our first English lesson for the neighborhood. We went knocking door to door to invite every neighbor. Right after breakfast we are going to walk around door-to-door and invite more neighbors for the adult English class.

Our kids were planning to open an amusement park in which they charge admission per person. When we explained to them economics here and how our job is to contribute, not to take from these people; they changed the rules. now, they are organizing booths in which every time a kid plays, they GET money. When we walk to share the news with the neighbors, they will take their wallets to the little corner corner tiny store in the neighborhood to make small change. I'm so excited that they are excited to give and share with all of their hearts.

What a grand education my children and i are getting from this new way of life of ours.

Teaching English and the Clean Your Soul Course To the Neighbors

I'm teaching English out of our ranch home five evenings a week from 5-7.On our strongest day yet, nine neighbors showed up; this past Tuesday, when it stormed, no one left their house in the downpour. When I taught out of the outdoor patio, it got quite dark during the second hour. Even in the dark, they were determined to learn.

In lesson one, I had planned to teach them the lyrics to this great Dan Zanes song "Hello Hello". Little could I imagine that I would spend over 20 minutes just practicing with the group to say "MY NAME IS". Wow.
