As a nomadic family, it doesn't make sense to have any pets. Back home in Israel, we had a dog for 15 1/2 years (who was hit by a car the year before we left) and several adorable cats. We are animal people and so, it's been nice to have chicks in our lives on the road. It's nice until they get less fuzzy and Mommy has to beg the kids to take care of them. (That's another story). This blog reflects our lives with chicks, in pictures and in movies, and all the amazing lessons children get to learn having pets in their lives: responsibility, physical affection, and the cycle of life.
So, it was lovely in our ranch life in La Lucha de la Tigra, Costa Rica. We kept them until I got sick of the smell; gave them to Sonia and Don Jose Ramon; and we're sure they've made a delish lunch by now.In the weeks we had them, the kids cuddled, danced, and sang with those chicks like one would with a favorite well-loved stuffed animal.
Here in our cabana in Panama, it has been awful. We've witnessed the death of five chicks in a row; two of them slow and painful; one of them slow and painful and yet he fought for so long. We called the last one Jesus. He really did come back to life. Brave little chick.
When nurse Linda came by to take care of Kobi's sudden migraine, she noted how badly the chicks were suffering. Rather than use up all of her natural oils on these heading-towards-death fuzzy patients; she advised the kids to give them as much love and make them as comfortable as possible in their last days. So, we opened a full time hospice, in which the kids did the best they could to nurture our dying friends, with a fervor and and innocence that only kids can give. The pictures reflect their care, the video reflects Orazi's love for the darling, dying early sick stages.
The next movie and pictures show Jesus at one of his lower points, right before resurrection number two or three. Every time we just knew he was taking his last breaths, he just blossomed back to health. Eventually, our brave little furry friend died, a slow and painful death. Orazi got the fly swatter to keep any insects from eating him. I hate this part!
